What are the types of shell-and-tube heat exchangers?

Author:

Summary:

The tube sheets and the shell of this product are integrated at both ends. When there is a significant temperature difference between the two fluids, it is sufficient to add a compensating ring (or expansion joint) at the corresponding position on the shell. When the thermal expansion of the shell and the tube bundle is inconsistent, the compensating ring will deform to compensate for the thermal expansion caused by the temperature difference.

  1. Fixed tube sheet type

In this product, the tube sheets at both ends and the shell are integrated. When there is a large temperature difference between the two fluids, it is sufficient to add a compensating ring (or expansion joint) at the corresponding position on the shell. When the thermal expansion of the shell and the tube bundle is inconsistent, the compensating ring will deform to compensate for the thermal expansion caused by the temperature difference.

Advantages: Simple structure, low cost. Disadvantages: Difficult to clean and maintain, the shell side must use materials that are not prone to scaling.

  2. U-tube type

In this product, each tube is U-shaped. The inlet and outlet of the fluid are located on both sides of the same place. The end head is divided into two chambers by a partition, allowing each tube to expand and contract freely to alleviate thermal compensation issues.

Advantages: Simple structure, lightweight, can be used in high temperature and high pressure environments. Disadvantages: Difficult to clean the tube side, requires materials that are not prone to scaling.

  3. Floating head type

In this product, one end of the tube sheet is not connected to the shell, and this end is called the floating head. When the tube is heated, the tube bundle and the floating head can expand and contract freely along the axial direction, offsetting the thermal stress caused by the temperature difference.

Advantages: Complex structure, easy to clean, easy to maintain, can offset thermal stress, widely used. Disadvantages: Small floating heads are prone to internal leakage, and the price is high.
