What are the common cleaning processes for heat exchangers?

Summary:

Due to the corrosion, erosion, and scaling of the medium, it is necessary to clean the heat exchanger. Below are several common cleaning processes, as follows:

       Due to corrosion, erosion, and scaling of the medium, it is necessary to clean the heat exchanger. Several common cleaning processes are listed below:

       Mechanical descaling method

       When the heat exchanger tube bundle has slight blockage or fouling, a stainless steel rod or low-carbon copper disc can be inserted from one end and pulled out from the other end to remove slight blockages or fouling and scaling. For thin scaling, a dedicated pipe cleaning brush can be selected based on the pipe size, with one end threaded with thick iron wire to pull the cleaning brush out of the heat exchange tube. When scaling is severe or completely blocked, soft metal can be used for pipe cleaning. When the pipe opening is blocked by scale or foreign objects, manual methods such as shoveling, scraping, and brushing can be used.

       High-pressure water cleaning

       High-pressure water cleaning uses high-pressure water flow generated by a high-pressure pump, directed to the areas that need cleaning through a specialized cleaning gun. The pressure adjustment range is 0 to 100 MPa, and when the scaling is not too firm, the pressure can be set around 40 MPa. When the structure is hard and tight, a high-alloy nozzle can also be inserted into the pipe for higher pressure cleaning. This method is generally used to clean the scale layer inside the tubes of shell-and-tube heat exchangers or to flush heat exchange equipment with removable tube bundles. Scale and foreign objects on the shell surface, such as the cleaning process for U-tube heat exchangers:

       1. Cleaning personnel should wear labor protection equipment;

       2. Adjust the water pressure reasonably according to the condition of the equipment, paying attention to the safety of personnel and equipment;

       3. Test the water gun;

       4. Clean the heat exchanger tubes and shell side. If the head of the equipment has been disassembled, a warning area should be set in the direction of the water gun during the cleaning process, with a designated person to remind.

       Chemical descaling

       The scaling substances should be chemically analyzed first, and then the solvent for cleaning should be determined. Generally, sulfate and silicate scales are cleaned with alkali, carbonate scales with acid, and oil scales can be treated with sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, laundry powder, detergent, etc., mixed with water in a certain proportion. When using chemical cleaning, it is necessary to consider adding a corrosion inhibitor. After chemical cleaning, rinse several times with clean water until the water is neutral. In addition to the above cleaning methods, an automatic cleaning method using sponge balls can also be employed.
